Well...you've done it now. Look what you've made me do...Welcome to the "Morsk Informs"TM blog. Where your friendly neighborhood subtacular Shaman is going to inform you of something on a (semi) regular basis. Today's "Morsk Informs"TM has to do with cooking.
I love cooking. My wife bugs me all the time to make an attempt to go on shows like Master Chef or Chopped: Amateurs...but I find my cooking to be more enjoyable when it is for a more intimate crowd. That said... I am going to share a simple recipe (or maybe two if I am in a generous mood later) that my wife loves, and can be easily altered to basically anyone's tastes. It also takes about 3 minutes total to make.
Microwave Chocolate Cake (or brownie)
This is a constant (friendly) battle between my wife and I whether this is a cake or a brownie...I call it a cake because of its consistency and the lightness it has after cooking. A brownie to me is often denser or richer than a cake...but that could be a whole different Morsk Informs.
What you need:
-1/4 cup white All Purpose Flour (I have never subbed any other flour...though I have 3 other kinds in the pantry)
-1/4 cup white sugar
-2 Tablespoons Cocoa powder (I use Hersey's, but any cocoa powder should work)
-No more than 1/4 tsp of salt (this is done by eye...I rarely actually measure salt when I am cooking, good rule of the kitchen: get bored...measure a teaspoon of salt and pour it into your hand...memorize what it looks like sitting on your palm...adjust from there when you need more/less)
Whisk together all the dry ingredients above in a microwave safe bowl/container. I use a bowl that can safely hold about 2 cups (16oz) of liquid so the cake has room to expand. Add the below wet ingredients:
3 Tablespoons water
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Whisk dry+wet ingredients together till they are smooth. This is where you can personalize the cake...have a left over Halloween mini candy bar...push it down into the middle of the batter (unwrap it first...plastic and chocolate cake don't mix too well), do you like nuts (no not that kind of nuts) in your cake? Throw some chopped walnuts, pecans, almonds...whatever you would like into the batter.
Microwave for 1 minute 40 seconds. You can go a little shorter or longer (no more than 2min 15seconds...that is where stuff starts to burn) depending on how "liquid" you want the cake center to be. Think molten chocolate lava cake sub 1 min 40 seconds and since there is no egg in the cake, you don't have to worry about anything being under-cooked and potentially life threatening. After cooking remove bowl (CAREFULLY) from microwave. I typically top my cake with some peanut butter (Reeses cup anyone?) and Nuttella as well as a little whipped cream (maybe if you're nice I will tell you how to make home made whipped cream later). You can let it cool a bit, or enjoy it while it is still warm.
Thank you for attending this session of "Morsk Informs"TM. Stay tuned for more fun information from your friendly neighborhood Subtacular Shaman
